Why Teen Boot Camps Might Not Work For Many Teenagers

A fundamental difference between ‘commercial’ boot camps, and traditional military establishments of the same name, can be summed up in a single word- willingness. New military recruits know it’s a precursor, a necessary step to becoming something they are willing and eager to become-a soldier. Conversely, the ‘inmates’ at teen boot camps aren’t there voluntarily; usually they’ve been sent as an alternative to serving jail time, or they’ve been brought by parents at the end of their tolerance for the teen’s behavior.

A lot of parents of aggressive and/or behaviorally struggling teenagers are searching for places to send these teens that will affect some kind of shift or change in the problems that they, as parents, have been unable, or unwilling to address. What isn’t realized in situations like this are that correctional programs of this sort are typically short term fixes, and do not adequately influence the teen in the long run.

The majority of programs are structured to employ the same rigid discipline and heavy emphasis on physical conditioning and exercises as the military does, in order to shift the mentalities and behaviors of those teens who’ve had troubles with the law, anti-social issues, troubles regarding their parents, drug abuse, and/or a variety of other disruptive behaviors.

In the actual military, new recruits are determined, purposeful, and eager to achieve the end goal of being made soldiers. Yet and still, their various teachers, instructors and commanding officers have their work cut out for them.

This fact is trebled when those under the auspices of the instructors are all unwilling youth who may feel they have nothing to gain except egress from the camp. When advertising their potential, the majority of corrective organizations put forward a specified length of time during which the teens will be ‘turned around’ or ready to be part of society. Phrases such as ‘scared straight’ are not regularly utilized in conjunction with their various methods.

If the teenager possesses no real urge to shift their thinking, than true positive transformation will never occur as a result of being forcibly enrolled in a program of this type. Instead, the youth may pull on whatever reserves of internal determination they can find in order to make it to the end of their sentence, and never end up taking a serious look at what brought them to that particular point to begin with.

Systems of support like therapy, and counseling geared toward finding root causes, seminars, etc., are necessary so that the subject can actually identify and relate to the reasoning behind the harmful behaviors. Additionally, when the teen in question is sent away to one of these programs, it may also give the parents a way out of acknowledging the parts they play in the existing dynamics of their relationships to the teens in question.

Although teen boot camps may offer something of a ‘quick fix’ for parents looking for immediate aide for problem youth, other alternatives like residential treatment centers and specialty boarding schools which are geared toward a more long term approach to behavioral and psychological modification may be better solutions. Researching what’s out there is a really good way of procuring aide when you feel a situation has spiraled beyond your control.

Science Summer Camp

Swift Nature Camp, is a Overnight Summer Camp in Wisconsin where children play outside while learning about Nature and Science. Here are some helpful hints parents can do at home

Teachers tell us the first step in becoming an environmentalist is seeing what nature offers. Often this can lead to a desire and commitment to conserve and protect the natural world we live in. This is one of our fundamental principals at Swift Nature Camp Walking or hiking through the woods is a regular part of Summer Science Camp.

Walking or hiking through the woods is a regular part of camp. However, many times staff and campers merely walk along the trail without really noticing what is around them. They overlook the sounds, sights, textures and diversity of the ecosystem.

There are several interesting activities that can be done while walking through the woodlands. Simple supplies are needed, so it will take only a few minutes to collect them. Or you can prepare a Woodland Walk Kit ahead of time for supplies, and index cards with directions for the activities.

Allow children to stop along the way and do the activities together. Let your children choose one or more of the following activities:

Find the Color Supplies: Paint samples–you can get these at the paint store for free. Ahead of time: Pass out the color strips. Assignment: Look for colors in nature that match the color strip. Record what you find. You can collect any samples on the ground, but if the color is on a living plant, you can pick it only if there are six remaining after you have done so. You can even make this a race for younger children Conversation: What surprised you most? Where is your favorite color in nature?

Life is Full of Decay Supplies: Several magnifying lenses, flashlight Ahead of time: know that you can find some rotten logs. Assignment: Find a downed tree in the woods. Examine what is growing on the log, such as moss or mushrooms. Look for any insects living in or on the log. Shine the flashlight inside the log. Is there evidence of any creatures, such as raccoons, opossum or snakes inside? Examine the bark to see what is happening to it. Turn the log over to see what is happening underneath. How is the forest recycling itself? Use the magnifying glass to look closely at anything that interests you. Conversation: What additional changes would you see next summer?

Sounds of Nature Supplies: Paper and pencil for each, you can get cds with sounds in the library bird field guide Ahead of time: Find out what types of birds are native to the woods around, listen to the cd and study the sounds Assignment: Sit in the woods a slight distance from others, and be quiet Close your eyes and listen. When you hear a sound, see if you can recall the bird call, Conversation: What was your favorite sound and why?

Getting Fit With The 1% Rule

Get fit. It’s something most of us want. Or worse. Need. Maybe you’re reading this wondering. How fat am I going to get in a few years? Forget everything. The 1% rule rocks.

In the last ten years, I’ve been researching the benefits of losing weight and how to get fit. In my analysis, I’ve found a trend most of us hate. Having reviewed thousands of programs myself, the one thing we all despise is gimmicks. You know. The lean bodies. The flat stomachs. Listen, we all don’t look like super models. But, we can slim down with a simple program called the 1% rule.

I have tiny confession to make. A long time ago (about 2007) I turned in my slippery copywriting skills to sway your opinion. It’s all bunk. If you’re reading this deep into this article, I owe you some industrial-strength honesty.

Now let’s get started shall we?

Right now you need to do one simple thing for me. With your fingers, pinch a good amount of fat on your body. What you’re holding equals just about 3500 calories.

To get fit with the hope of losing weight has to do with numbers (the 1% rule is coming so stay with me). Let’s keep it simple. 4th grade multiplication ought to do the trick. 3500 x 7 days = ? 24,500. Nice job if you actually did the math yourself.

Now if you want to lose 7 ugly pounds in 7 days guess what? You need to cut out 24,500 calories. Your options are either to starve yourself like a marooned person on a desolate island or workout like an olympic athlete.

Here’s another confession. I’m not a superhero. Neither are you. Plus, if you were actually able to starve yourself dry of calories something would happen. You would drop dead from exhaustion.

Are you thinking about the impossible? Can you really lose the weight? Yes. But only if you start using the 1% rule. The amazing thing about the 1% rule is it won’t chain you at home starving while your friends and family are eating dinner.

If I was to bet dollars to donuts (bavarian creme are my favorites), I would guess you’ve lost some weight a while ago. But not enough right? You failed. Admit it. We all do. However, as we grow older we just get enormously embarrassed by the process and usually give up. The 1% rule helps you adjust to your new regimen.

The 1% rule is so simple you will most likely think it’s a joke. However, it’s actually based on progressive training. The 1% rule states that you can manage to eat 1% less food everyday. Therefore, you can also struggle through a 1 minute increase in the time you exercise everyday.

Here’s a quick example. On day 1 you cut out 1% calories from your intake (or cut down on your portions). On day 1 you will also do a 1 minute workout. Who can’t workout for 1 minute? Day 2 you then drop 2% of your calories and workout 2 minutes. Even with minor cheating, you’re soon on your way to cutting about 700 calories a day by day 31. If you’re skeptical, I was too when I first discovered this regimen. But let me ask you a question. How come you couldn’t keep the weight off the last time you tried?

You and I know exactly what happened. The shiny new get fit program isn’t so shiny anymore. The devastating cut in food starts eating at you, right? The combination creates a double-whammy feeling in your brain. Pretty soon you’re eating fried onion rings for dinner in front of the T.V.

You should know by now you have just about everything you need to lose all of the weight you want. Minus one tiny thing. The power to convert your brain from thinking about gobbling up yummy food to eating wisely while exercising everyday.

It’s those old fat patterns in your brain. They’ve gone wild giving you taste-bud sensations by triggering pleasure moments of mouth-water indulgences. Listen, we all do it so relax:-).

Why Obtain A Dental Insurance Despite Your Low Income?

Many people cover health insurance for themselves and their family or get covered under the group insurance from their employer’s side, but what they miss out is to notice that they are not covered for dental insurance. This is one area that you need to cover immediately if you have overlooked for dental treatment is very expensive.

There are different kinds of Dental plans that you can look at and choose which one is suitable for your families’ needs. The insurance can take care of diagnostics and normal checkup as well as specific treatment costs that you may require.

Choosing the right plan for you and your family will mean that you go through in detail the plans that are available, understand all options and choose the one that suits you. You can approach the consultant or the company to get to know all details.

If you profile the members of your family it is quite likely that your children will need frequent visits to the Dentist to deal with their growing teeth and problems that they face. So also the case with the elders in the family, who will need constant attention and treatment for their dental problems that increase with age. The cost of dental care can be quite huge but then with the right policy and plan in place you do not have to worry much.

It has been found that the average cost of dental treatment per individual works out to be around $ 5000 per annum, whereas when you go in for a Dental plan, all you spend is around 1000$ per annum which is way cheaper than spending such huge amount.

It is quite likely that due to the fear of having to spend money, you will avoid going to the Dentist when you have a gum infection or gingivitis and allow the problem to get worse and suffer in the bargain.

Therefore decide today to go in for a Dental plan and start working on getting at least three quotes. Do not worry, most of them do not ask for your previous dental history.

The Dental medical costs are rising by over 300 % every year and there is no way that you will be able to afford such huge costs in the years to come. Better would be to obtain a cover for Dental insurance now and have good sleep.

Information For Potential Property Buyers Applying For Tax Credits

Property sales and the housing industry are amongst the economic victims of the recent recession in the country, with prices and sales figures dropping. Due to its importance to the country’s economy, the government has created and enforced new legislation in an attempt to boost the housing industry.

In 2008, the law on Tax Credit for Home Buyers was initiated and by 2009, was revised further. The revision in 2010 saw new legislation being created for tax credits, based on newer developments in the economy.

In 2010, the Tax Credit for Home Buyers law was revised again to lessen the strict guidelines for qualifying for the tax credit. However, one must get to know the Tax Credit for Home Buyers law thoroughly in order to avoid any future issues in buying your next home. Below you will find a summary of what the Tax Credit for Home Buyers law entails.

The law applies to first-time buyers who have not owned any principal residence in the last three years and is subject to income limitations, depending on the status of the individual. A single buyer should have an adjusted gross income between the range of $125,000 and $145,000 to be eligible for the full credit. Married couples, however, need to earn between $225,000 and $245,000 as they are expected to earn more than that of a single individual.

Additional restrictions include an age limit and overall home price. An individual must be 18 years of age at the date of the closing of a property in order to qualify for the tax credit. In addition, homes that are prices over $800,000 are not eligible for the tax credit.

Because the revised law is only applicable for the home purchases made after November 6, 2009, the 2010 tax credit for home buyers requires a proof of purchase with a properly executed settlement statement to their tax return or experience great inconveniences with government officials.

Because of the changes done for the law, the rules for home purchase tax credits are quite complicated even though the revision allows for less stringent requirements. This must be researched to the fullest extent in order to more smoothly purchase your first home. For a more help and a reliable reference, a comprehensive and detailed information on the topic can be found in the IRS website, irs.gov.

The government website also has FAQs and instructions on the on how to apply for the home purchase tax credits from the same website. The site has the rundown on all requirements needed when applying for the credit.

Earth Day is Every Day for Kids

America celebrated the first Earth Day On April 22, 1970. It was a need celebration to bring to light how polution was killing this world. Today, Earth Day is no longer celebrated nationally but is celebrated around the globe.

Since those early days, we have done a pretty good job cleaning up the planet. Yet , there is a staggering divide between children and the outdoors, child advocacy expert Richard Louv directly links the lack of nature in the lives of today’s wired generation-he calls it nature-deficit. A childhood trend that may cause rises in attention disorders, obesity, and depression.

His recent book,Last Child in the Woods, has spurred a national dialogue among educators, health professionals, parents, developers and conservationists. It clearly show we and our youth need to spend time in nature.

Schools have tried to use nature in the class room for some time. At Holman School in NJ, Ms. Millar began an environmental project in the school’s courtyard. It has become quite an undertaking–even gaining state recognition. It contains several habitat areas, including a Bird Sanctuary, a Hummingbird/ Butterfly Garden, A Woodland Area with a pond, and a Meadow. My students currently maintain the Bird Sanctuary–filling seed and suet feeders, filling the birdbaths, building birdhouses, even supplying nesting materials! In addition, this spring they will be a major force in the clean up and replanting process. They always have energy and enthusiasm for anything to do with “their garden”.

Despite schools doing their best to get kids to play outside, we as a nation have lost the ability to just send our kids out to play. Yet, it seems we are learning that Summer Camps help children grow into mature adults. A new British study finds that most modern parents overprotect their kids. Half of all kids have stopped climbing trees, and 17 percent have been told that they can’t play tag or chase. Even hide-and-seek has been deemed dangerous. And that dreaded stick…”will put out someone’s eye”.

Can technology be the blame for the decline in outdoor play? Adrian Voce says “Children are not being allowed many of the freedoms that were taken for granted when we were children,” “They are not enjoying the opportunities to play outside that most people would have thought of as normal when they were growing up.”

Voce argued “that it was becoming a ‘social norm’ for younger children to be allowed out only when accompanied by an adult.” “Logistically that is very difficult for parents to manage because of the time pressures on normal family life,” he said. “If you don’t want your children to play out alone and you have not got the time to take them out then they will spend more time on the computer.”

The Play England study quotes a number of play providers who highlight the benefits to children of taking risks. ‘Risk-taking increases the resilience of children,’ said one. ‘It helps them make judgments,’ said another. We as parents want to play it safe and we need to rethink safety vs adventure.

Examples of risky play that should be encouraged include fire-building, den-making, watersports and climbing trees. These are all activities that a Summer camp can provide. At camp children to get outside take risks and play, this while being supervised by responsible young adults.

Looking at the Mother’s Day in Many Cultures

The festivities of the present- day U.S. & many other countries date back to an essay penned by Julia Ward Howe in the 1870s, & later when Anna Jarvis promoted setting an official celebration in the early 1900s.

The Mothers Day holiday is quite recognizable to most people as an occasion of commemorating the love & appreciation felt for mommies everywhere. More and more frequently this also means praising the people in our lives who have been like mothers to us too. Mothers Day is commemorated at various times between cultures, and this happens for number of reasons; here are some quick facts about the observance of Mother’s Day at home and abroad!

The earliest origins of the modern Mothers’ Day, however, may lie in the society of the ancient Greeks. The Greeks held a festival in those days that functioned to honor mother goddesses, and human mothers by extension, every year around the winter to spring equinox. After the Romans took power later on, they continued this tradition.

In the United Kingdom, the date on which Mothers Day is recognized each year is related to the timing of Lent, whereas Canada & the United States always celebrate the 2nd Sunday of May. The second Sunday of May is, in fact, the choice of eighty-two several countries on six continents– this is every continent with a native population. Overall, May is by far the most popular month in which to set Mother’s Day, with 104 countries choosing to celebrate sometime during the fifth month.

In other nations such as Bulgaria & Ukraine, Mothers Day occasions take place on March 8th to coincide with the observance of International Women’s Day. Still other locations, including Egypt, observe Mothers Day on March 21, the spring equinox; this may just be a throwback to the original celebrations so many centuries ago. In the same manner, other days are frequently chosen to coincide with the local culture’s established festivities of mothers, much like many other well known holidays.

Mother’s Days in many countries are major gift-giving occasions, & there can be a lot of pressure to formulate the absolute perfect gift. Summer Camps with Animals

Environmental Summer Camps are the place for kids and animals to meet, whether the camp includes animals as a part of traditional camp programs or makes a more formal approach as a science camp.

For many children making a connection with animals is a great way to reconnect with nature. Campers can find and develop a desire to know more about the nature they find all around them. When they follow that desire, they begin to acquire a deep respect for nature that will serve them all their lives.

At Swift Nature Camp, also known as a Science Camp, there is a unique pond aquarium gives kids a chance to see pond life from a frog’s point of view, while our Nature’s Neighbors live animal collection provides opportunities for up-close study and care of several common Northwoods residents as well as a few exotic immigrants. Campers with their own small animals are encouraged to bring them to camp to share with others. The animals live in the Nature Center, where all campers can enjoy and learn about them.

Children at Swift Nature Camp have the opportunity to understand our environment from hands-on learning experiences. These include field trips to a fish hatchery, to watch goose banding projects and butterfly counts, and even a close encounter with a live wild owl.

Animals are a part of Swift Nature Camps voluntary merit program, in which campers can earn special patches by learning skills in categories such as insects, bird watching, pet care, and horseback riding. Acquiring skills is never separate from the fun and play that is a part of being a camper.

Todays children grow up too fast and need time to play. The summer camp you are looking for should challenge your child to try new things, but not in a stressful way. Camp is not school! Interaction with animals can be a perfect way for a child to learn by the natural discovery of play. Besides all the fun and excitement of a traditional camp, the kids have the joy of discovering Nature and the world we live in.

Every camper is an individual and benefits from his or her own particular mix of play and skill development. Swift Nature Camp has found a way to accomodate that range with a voluntary merit program that includes experience with animals. A camper’s interaction with animals can be refined into skills involving horseback riding, insects, pet care and bird watching. These opportunities never come at the expense of fun!

The joy of discovering nature is the joy of discovering the world we live in. Living in a natural environment with access to animals is a perfect invitation for expansive play. Camp is a place where children can learn about animals as a participant rather than just receiving information. Camp is more fun and less stressful than school, and the world becomes the classroom.
